BL Tell us what you do for a living.
SA

I’m passionate about living a healthy-lifestyle and empowering kids (and the grown-ups who love them) to eat and live healthy which is why I founded HealthBarn USA in 2005 located at Abma’s Farm, Wyckoff, NJ and wrote Appetite for Life:  The Thumbs-Up, No-Yucks Guide to Get Your Kid to be a Great Eater, HarperOne, 2012.  I spend most days teaching hands-on educational programs year-round on the farm including summer camp, school & scout field trips and assemblies.  I am grateful to be able to use my nutrition degree and marketing background to help others be and feel their best!

BL Tell us what you do for fun.
SA

Fun for me is when I’m with the kids at HealthBarn USA.  Fun for me personally is relaxation, which means being in nature.  Hiking, kayaking, riding horses or just sitting on a quiet beach is all that I need to recharge my batteries.

BL What is your favorite Bergen LEADS memory?

SA

I really enjoyed the final project presentation at Bergen Community College when we presented views on municipal government and the potential for shared services.  It was rewarding to be part of a team project that had a communication forum and receptive audience for the final presentation.

BL What was your biggest takeaway from your Bergen LEADS year?

SA

I grew up in Bergen County and now I’m a business owner (and a lot older) in Wyckoff, NJ and the year at Bergen Leads opened my eyes to new aspects about the county.  I was completely unaware of costs and structure in place to run it well including health issues (mental health, elderly care, hospice, etc.), transportation challenges, and education and safety needs.  We covered a lot in one year and it was amazing.

BL How has your experience in Bergen LEADS impacted your life, personally and/or professionally?

SA

Whenever I attend an event whether at a school, healthcare conference or local chamber of commerce meeting, I always meet Bergen Leads alumni.  It’s amazing to be able to continuously connect with such a diverse and talented group of people even after graduating from the program.

BL If you were talking to someone who was thinking about applying to Bergen LEADS, what would you tell him/her?

SA

Do it!  You will see Bergen County in a new light and importantly get informed to be able take action to make it an even better place to work and live.
